NELSON ARTIST
     

 
Bill Burke was born in Lower Hutt, Wellington in 1960. Like his mother and grandfather, Bill's passion and focus has always been drawing and painting.

 

As a student at Nelson College, Bill began drawing in pencil, and pen and ink, holding his first exhibition as a Nelson Artist at the age of 19. Many of his following originals were produced in watercolour and pastel. Now he predominately paints in oils on canvas, wonderfully recording New Zealand's unique light and vibrant colours.

 

The familiar scenes of the Nelson region are instantly recognisable in Bill Burke's paintings, from the golden sands of the world renowned Kaiteriteri and Abel Tasman National Park to the constant shipping activity of New Zealand's busiest and largest fishing port. Maritime scenes are a particular favourite of Bills.

 

While many of his original paintings feature landscapes and buildings well known to his hometown Nelson, he also portrays other well-recognised locations in the South Island including Christchurch, Queenstown and Central Otago.

 

Bill's original works provide not only locals, but also national and international visitors with a colourful and permanent reminder of our maritime heritage, exquisite views of New Zealand life and characteristic portrayals of animal behaviour.
